When I first visited Iraq nearly three years ago, I was welcomed into Basra by a rejoicing local population, thrilled that their brutal dictator, Saddam Hussein, had been overthrown and were optimistic that a new dawn for their country was on the horizon - for a moment, I thought I was wrong to oppose the war.

Racial and Religious Hatred Bill - a triumph for Free Speech

As you may know the Liberal Democrats were instrumental in defeating the Government twice on the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill - only the second and third defeats this Government has suffered since coming to power in 1997. The second defeat was by just one vote, and the Government's embarrassment was made worse by the fact that Tony Blair himself missed the vote, as his Whips clearly misjudged the opposition.
