12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 8th Jul 2002

On 4 July the Minister of State for School Standards, David Miliband MP, announced the names of a further 160 secondary schools which have been awarded Specialist School status. Amongst those successful was The John Kyrle High School of Ross-on-Wye that has been designated 'technology college'.

Local Lib Dem MP, Paul Keetch, commenting on the news said, "I am delighted that the efforts made by the Headteacher, Nigel Griffiths, the school Governing Body and staff have been recognised at last with the news that the school has been awarded Specialist status. "

"I was involved with the bid and know how much hard work was put into this project by the school and those associated with it. "

"I believe that this will not only be an enhancement for the school itself but will prove highly beneficial for the local community generally."
