Keetch Meets Troops And Fire Fighters During Strike

12.00.00am GMT Fri 15th Nov 2002

Hereford's MP Paul Keetch has met RAF Green Goddess crews based in Hereford covering the county during the 48 hour fire strike. He also spoke to striking fire fighters on the picket line at Hereford Fire Station.

"I really wish this strike was not happening", said Mr Keetch.

"I wanted to thank the RAF for the emergency cover they are providing, and to tell the striking fire fighters that I hope this will be their last day on strike, both sides need to get around the table and try and resolve this dispute. I was pleased to see that there was a clear understanding from the crews on the picket line that pay rises need to be linked to modernisation."

"The RAF have two Green Goddesses in Hereford and a modern van equipped with breathing apparatus, cutting gear and support equipment. I have no doubt they could provide top quality emergency cover, but of course it can never be equal to that provided by the professionals. It is clear that it would be better for everyone if we can reach a quick resolution and get our firecrews back into work again."

"In the first day of the strike the Green Goddesses were only called out once. The MP also paid tribute to retained fire fighters who are not on strike."

"We should be thankful in Herefordshire for the retained fire fighters who cover so much of the county - they continue to provide an excellent level of cover"."
