LOCAL MP SUPPORTS HEREFORD SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT SCHEME

4.53.18pm GMT Tue 2nd Mar 2004

Lib Dem MP for Hereford Paul Keetch has backed a plan for Hereford to be one of the pilot locations for a new Sustainable Transport initiative.

Hereford is one of seven locations shortlisted from over 50 applicants for a scheme to "create a Sustainable Travel Demonstration Town", which is organised by the Department of Transport.

"I have submitted a letter of support to the Council for the bid for this scheme," Mr Keetch said. "It is always important to look at more ways of developing integrated sustainable transport, and we need to make sustainable transport like cycling, walking and public transport available to more and more people.

"I think that most people support more environmentally friendly transport, but if the public transport or pedestrian and cyclist safety measures are not available then it is not feasible to expect everyone to leave their cars at home.

"This is why Hereford is absolutely ideal for this scheme. We have some chronic traffic problems, but not the public transport infrastructure to offer an effective alternative. If this project can help to remedy that situation then everyone will benefit."

The Transport Department's scheme would offer the two winning locations a total of £1.5 million each year for the next five years to help implement best practice in sustainable transport policies.

"If this extra funding came to Hereford and was used properly then it could make a real difference to the traffic problems in the city, it could help people and businesses all over the city and it would be good for the local environment as well. I hope that I can help the Council convince the Department for Transport of just how strong Hereford's bid is."
