KEETCH DELIGHTED BY ROSS FLOOD DEFENCE NEWS3.01.54pm GMT Mon 22nd Nov 2004 Hereford's Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Keetch, says he is delighted by the announcement from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) that the £5 million grant for flood defence in Ross on Wye has been approved. "I am delighted that Herefordshire Council has been successful in its bid for funding to build the flood defences for Ross on Wye", said Mr Keetch. "It is a tribute to the officers involved in the scheme, and local councillors who have pressed so hard. I was pleased to have been able to discuss the plans several times in Ross with local residents and council officers, and to have discussed the plans with officials of DEFRA regionally and at national level. "I saw at first hand the damage done in December 2000 to the town centre when the Chatterley and Rudhall brooks flooded causing serious problems throughout the town centre. "This also shows that by sensibly lobbying Ministers and not entering into petty party political point scoring, we can attract support for Herefordshire from this Labour Government. If me meeting Ministers and presenting them with a fair case results in this kind of infra structure and improvement, then I consider this as part and parcel of my job. "I now hope that Hereford constituency will have an added extra by getting approval for the flood defence scheme for Hereford City. This would be a great Christmas present for the City following on from this great news for Ross," the MP added.
