KEETCH IN TALKS WITH ENVIRONMENT AGENCY TO SAVE ROSS AND HEREFORD FLOOD SCHEMES

2.03.51pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 12th Jun 2006

Liberal Democrat MP Paul Keetch has today met with the Area Manager, Flood Risk Manager and the Environment Manager for the Wye/Usk Rivers of the Environment Agency to discuss the flood defence schemes proposed for Ross on Wye and Hereford.

"I met today with Environment Agency officers to discuss problems with the Ross and Hereford flood defence schemes," Mr Keetch stated.

"The Ross scheme cannot go ahead due to a shortfall in funding which has occurred partly due to an increase in cost of the scheme, but also due to inflation and the overrunning of other priority schemes in the country funded from the same pot.

"However, the Environment Agency have assured me that Ross will get its scheme once additional funding can be made available, although this may not be for another two years. I will be seeking assurances that adequate, albeit temporary, defence measures are made available where they will assist to safeguard Ross in the meantime since the residents of Ross deserve at least that.

"In Hereford," Mr Keetch continued, "we have a greater risk of losing funding for the flood defence scheme altogether. Funding that has been fought for long and hard will be taken away if there is any more delay getting the planning application approved.

"The Environment Agency has been able to make some modifications to the scheme that local people have asked for but they cannot do more without compromising the effectiveness of the defences. Any more deliberation will mean that the planning application will be delayed and the scheme could then be jeopardised completely. I cannot emphasise strongly enough the need for this to go ahead now - there are so many more areas crying out for the funds to build flood defences; we really don't want to lose the funding to the other areas and leave Hereford back at square one! Again, I will be asking Herefordshire Council to act speedily on this and deal with the planning application urgently - we simply cannot miss our chance again."
