KEETCH CALLS FOR RESPECT FOR FALLEN SOLDIERS

2.28.57pm GMT Thu 7th Jan 2010

MP for Hereford, Paul Keetch, is sponsoring a parliamentary motion to ask the Home Secretary to investigate whether an al-Muhajiroun proposed demonstration in the town of Wootton Bassett would breach the Public Order Act 1986.

Commenting Mr Keetch said, "Last year saw many of our brave soldiers lose their lives in Afghanistan. I feel that the al-Muhajiroun demonstration would be disrespectful to the memory of those who have died serving their country.

"The town of Wootton Bassett has been a focal point over the past year for people to pay their respects as coffins arrive back from Afghanistan. It should remain a place for people to pay their respects and not the site for a political demonstration. I very much hope that the Home Secretary uses the Public Order Act 1986 to prevent any demonstration in Wootton Bassett.

"I am pleased that so far 70 Members of Parliament from all parties have added their name to this motion. The cross party consensus shows how important an issue it is, how much we support our troops and how much we wish to respect the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our values."
